How to Choose the Right Waxing Professional: Tips for First-Timers

If you're considering waxing for the first time, congratulations! Waxing is a great way to achieve smooth skin that lasts for weeks. However, choosing the right professional can be tricky - after all, you want someone who will make you feel comfortable and confident during your appointment. In this blog post, we'll give you some tips on how to choose the right waxing professional for your needs.

Top 5 (most obvious) things to look for:

  • Qualifications: licensed esthetician with experience and extra training in the specific area.

  • Clean and sanitary: clean room and clean linens. Passes all TDLR inspections. Properly disinfects tools. No double dipping sticks. Wears gloves.

  • Reviews: choose a 5 star rating. What others have to say is important.

  • Location: convenient and private.

  • Price: you should be cautious about cheap waxing services! Sometimes that can mean under qualified, not properly licensed, use of low end products or unsanitary. However, outrageously expensive doesn’t always mean better.

Above and beyond things to consider:

  • Speed: is your waxer fast?
Duh, they should be! The term “speed waxing” is thrown out there by a lot of waxing places. But no professional waxer who is not still in training, waxes slowly. OUCH! If your esthetician is not fast with waxing, they should not be waxing at all. All waxing should be “speed waxing.”

  • Discomfort: does it hurt?
The amount of pain you experience should be minimal. Read reviews and get referrals from friends. If your wax is extremely painful, it might be time to find a new wax lady!

  • Accuracy: is your wax done thoroughly?

Let’s go back to speed.. that’s important , on the top of the list. However, what does speed matter if you leave with a bunch of hair left behind to deal with yourself?! Or uneven eyebrows? The worst! You should be 100% satisfied with your results and smoothness after a wax. If you’re not, say something and have it corrected. Stray hairs, stubble and wax residue should absolutely not be left behind after a good wax. Speed shouldn’t be more important than accuracy.

  • Flexibility: is your esthetician willing to work with you?
Can you add more areas or change your mind about others? This is your service and your money that you’re spending on it. It should be exactly what you want. Any proficient waxer should be able to accommodate changes. There will of course be some exceptions to this. (Wanting to add full leg wax when you only have a lip wax booked on a busy day, probably not happening.) You just want an esthetician who is willing and able to be flexible.

  • Comfort/personalization: does your waxer know what you want to hear and you need to feel? Do you want more or less conversation? Can she tell? Does she have good bedside manner? Does she make you feel confident that you’re “normal?” Size, shape, color. C-section scar, hemorrhoids, physical restrictions and age should not matter during your wax. You should not feel judged but feel completely comfortable and confident.

  • Trust: do you trust that what happens in the waxing room, stays in the waxing room? Do you know that you’re not being talked/posted about? It’s very unprofessional for an esthetician to gossip about their client’s “private” information and some do!

  • Education and distraction: is your waxer able to distract you from what’s happening in the service with conversation? Making you laugh so you’re less nervous? Is she educating you on waxing and post-care? Or are you laying there in awkward silence sweating profusely and praying it will be over soon?

  • Reliability: is your esthetician on time or always making you wait? Does she always show up for your scheduled appointments? Do you feel like your service is being rushed because she’s running behind schedule? Your time is valuable so remember that!

  • What are you getting beyond the service?
Therapy, advice, counseling, friendship, waxing education, confidence. These things are #morethanjustawax and you deserve it!
